Origin: Turkey, Greece

Warming, aromatic, and slightly bitter, oregano is an herbaceous perennial and common garden plant. Native to the warm, dry climate of the Mediterranean, the plant’s volatile oils are concentrated in sunlight, giving oregano its distinct flavor. Oregano leaf is a familiar spice used in culinary dishes and can also be infused in oil or brewed as tea.

Oregano is a warm and aromatic yet slightly bitter herb in the mint family. Good quality oregano has a pungency that numbs the tongue. The best quality oregano is grown in a warm, dry climate. The name is derived from the Greek, meaning "mountain of joy". Sunlight encourages the concentration of the essential oils that give oregano its flavor.

Two other herbs are used in the same ways as common oregano but have different properties. Mexican oregano is a plant in the verbena family with an even stronger flavor, while marjoram is a closely related plant that lacks oregano's essential oil and has a gentler "mouth feel."

Active Compounds: Carvacrol, Thymol, P-cymene, Caryophyllene, Flavonoids, Phenolic Acids, Palmitic Acid & Linoleic Acid

Actions: Antimicrobial, Antifungal, Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Carminative, Expectorant, Antispasmodic

Indications: Oregano is a potent, warming herb used in herbalism for its strong antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, largely due to compounds such as carvacrol and thymol. It is widely used to support immune function, relieve respiratory issues (coughs, colds), and improve digestive health by addressing bacteria and soothing gut discomfort. Used as a natural antibiotic to fight infections, including cold/flu, respiratory congestion, and UTIs.

Precautions: Oregano (as a culinary herb) is generally safe, but medicinal amounts (supplements/oils) carry significant risks, including potential miscarriage, blood-thinning effects, and allergic reactions, especially in people with allergies to Lamiaceae plants (mint, sage, basil). Pregnant/nursing women, those on diabetes or blood-thinning meds, and patients scheduled for surgery should avoid medicinal oregano.

Herbal Magick: Oregano is a potent magickal herb associated with joy, protection, love, and purification. Ruled by Venus and the element of Air, it is traditionally used to banish negativity, foster happiness, and promote psychic abilities. Its name translates to "joy of the mountain," and it was traditionally used in Greek wedding ceremonies to ensure happiness.
