Mullein Flower is the bright egg-yolk-yellow bloom of the tall Mullein plant, gathered from its second-year flowering spike. While the plant's soft, fuzzy leaf is best known for lung and respiratory support, the flower carries its own distinct traditional reputation — most famously as the basis for infused mullein flower oil, a long-trusted folk remedy for ear discomfort.
Traditionally infused into oil for use with earaches, and also used topically for mouth discomfort and minor skin irritation. The flower has a gentler, more anti-inflammatory character than the leaf, and has traditionally been noted for a mild calming quality as well. A yellow dye has also been extracted from the flowers since Roman times for cloth and hair rinses.
NOTE: Mullein flower oil should never be used in place of professional medical care if an inner ear infection is suspected, or if there is fever, discharge, or symptoms lasting more than three days. Do not use ear oil preparations if the eardrum is perforated. As with any herb, consult a healthcare provider before use if you are on medication, pregnant, breastfeeding, or have underlying health conditions.
In magick, Mullein — long called "Hag's Taper" — has a deep folk history as a protective plant, traditionally gathered by moonlight and used in protection charms or planted near the home to ward off evil. Its tall, torch-like flowering spike has long symbolized light in darkness, courage, and illumination, and it is often carried or burned for protection, banishing, and to light the way through difficult transitions.
