Butcher's Broom Root comes from a plant known to botanists as Ruscus aculeatus, which is actually a member of the asparagus family and distantly related to lilies. While often categorized with other quality bulk herbs, Butcher's Broom Root is actually a woody evergreen shrub found primarily in deep forests and along temperate coastlines. It is native to the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. At one time, its stems were used to protect curing meats from rodents and to make brooms for butcher's stalls.

Ruscus aculeatus has mildly astringent, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. Ancient Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder wrote of this particular herb in his work Naturalis Historia, describing its ability to reduce the swelling in diseased limbs.

It is important to know that this herb is not the same as Broom (Cytisus scoparius, or Irish Broom). Broom is also a toxic herb.
