Allspice has a complex flavor that combines tastes of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The spice itself is the unripe fruit of Pimenta dioica, an evergreen shrub native to Jamaica and parts of Central America. Famous for its sweet, spicy fragrance and flavor, allspice berries are often found in Caribbean cuisine and seasoning blends. Whole allspice can be added to mulled cider recipes and macerated as a liquid extract.

The Spanish discovered allspice growing in the Caribbean during Columbus's early voyages to the Americas. They introduced the spice to Europe during the 1600's. Despite its popularity, cultivation outside its native region has been uncommon and often unsuccessful. Allspice thrives in warm climates and grows almost entirely in the Western Hemisphere. Due to its limited range, it is not well known in many parts of the world. It is a classic ingredient for marinades and jerk rubs and is often included in hot mulled cider during the frosty winter months.

Active Compounds: Eugenol, Quercetin, gallic acid, ericifolin, tannins, and resin

Actions: Anti-inflammatory, Anti-microbial, Antioxidant, Analgesic, Carminative, Digestive Stimulant.

Indications: Allspice is used in traditional medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties, largely due to its high eugenol content. It is commonly used to treat digestive issues (gas, bloating, indigestion), relieve muscle and joint pain, manage blood sugar, and combat infections.

Precautions: Its high Eugenol content can reduce blood clotting and is not recommended medicinally to anyone with bleeding disorders. Discontinue use at least 2 weeks before any surgical procedures. If you are allergic to cloves, you may have a reaction to allspice.
