About Yooperlite (Sodalite-Rich Syenite)
Yooperlite is a coined name for a type of Syenite that comes from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, primarily along the beaches of Lake Superior. Syenites form from slowly cooling magma under the Earth. They are mainly composed of Sodalite and plagioclase feldspar (similar to moonstone, labradorite, etc). Their distinctive fluorescence under UV light is primarily attributed to the presence of Sodalite. When exposed to UV light, the Sodalite within Yooperlites absorbs the light energy and then re-emits it as visible light, resulting in the characteristic glowing effect. The UV effect is what makes it different from other sodalites (all sodalites can be UV-reactive, but all Yooperlites are UV-reactive).
