Achillea millefolium is a member of the Asteraceae family with clusters of numerous small, fragrant flowers and featherlike leaves. Both a garden cultivar and a wild weed, yarrow is popular in traditional Western herbalism for its many healthful properties. Our yarrow powder is ground from organic dried yarrow leaf and yarrow flower. Yarrow leaf and flower powder can be tinctured, encapsulated, and blended into skin care recipes.
Yarrow is a flowering perennial, common in North America but also native to Europe and Asia. Yarrow grows stalks during the summer months, with a height that is dependent upon the seasonal rainfall. During dry years, these stalks may grow only a foot or two, conserving energy in their roots. Clusters of tiny white flowers grow atop the stalks, emitting a distinctive and characteristic aroma.
Yarrow received its Latin name, Achillea, from the legendary Greek hero Achilles. According to the common legend, Achilles's mother dipped him into the river Styx by the ankle in an effort to make him invulnerable. Fighting many battles as a seemingly invincible warrior, Achilles used yarrow to treat the wounds of his fellow soldiers. He later died from a wound to his heel, as it was the one unprotected part of his anatomy.

Indications: Yarrow is a versatile herb with a long history of use in treating wounds, stopping bleeding, and reducing inflammation. Also known as "bloodwort," it is highly effective at arresting bleeding and has traditionally been applied to wounds, burns, and cuts. Additionally, yarrow can help alleviate irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and soothe abdominal cramps. The herb contains compounds such as apigenin and chamazulene, which offer anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Warm yarrow tea can help reduce fevers by promoting perspiration and provide relief for sore throats. Topically, yarrow is used to soothe eczema and rashes and to treat skin infections.
Precautions: Yarrow is likely safe in food amounts but poses risks in medicinal doses, especially during pregnancy (possible miscarriage risk) and for those with Asteraceae/ragweed allergies. Key contraindications include bleeding disorders, surgery, epilepsy, and combining with blood-thinners, sedatives, or lithium. Topical use may cause skin irritation. Long-term or high-dose use is not recommended; it may cause headaches, dizziness, or nausea.
Herbal Magick: Yarrow is a powerful herb in magick lore, believed to offer protection, aid in divination, and promote healing. It is traditionally used to create psychic shields, banish negativity, and attract love. Associated with the warrior Achilles and the healer Chiron, yarrow is famously employed to staunch both physical and emotional bleeding, increase confidence, and enhance psychic sight. It is known to improve clairvoyance and facilitate spiritual communication. In divination rituals, particularly during Samhain, yarrow is used to deepen insight and enhance dream work. It is also incorporated into love charms, spells, and wedding rituals to foster love and lasting relationships. Additionally, it is believed to boost physical beauty and glamour.
