Spilanthes is a small flowering herb in the daisy family, easily recognized by its bright yellow-and-red cone-shaped blooms. Native to tropical regions of South America and now cultivated worldwide, it has a long history across South American, Asian, and African folk traditions. The plant earned its common name "toothache plant" for the distinctive tingling, numbing sensation produced when the flowers or leaves are chewed.
Traditionally used to support oral comfort and gum health, Spilanthes has also been used as a general tonic, to support healthy digestion, and as a stimulating addition to teas and tinctures. The active compound spilanthol is responsible for its signature tingling effect and mouth-watering, salivating quality — traditionally valued as a sialagogue (saliva-stimulating herb). Sometimes brewed as a tea, taken as a tincture, or chewed directly in small amounts.
NOTE: Spilanthes should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited safety data. Those with autoimmune conditions should use caution, given its traditional reputation as an immune-stimulating herb. Start with a small amount, as the tingling or numbness can be intense for those unfamiliar with the herb. As with any herb, consult a healthcare provider before use if you are on medication or have underlying health conditions.
In magick, Spilanthes carries a folk reputation as a plant of vitality, courage, and quickened speech — its tingling, activating effect on the mouth has led some traditions to associate it with truth-telling, eloquence, and breaking through blocks to communication. It has also been used in folk charm work tied to boldness, confidence, and awakening dormant energy within the body.
