Panax ginseng is a member of the Araliaceae family, native to the mountainous, forested region between China and Korea. Ginseng root has long been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine and throughout other Asian cultures. Considered more stimulating than American ginseng, red ginseng is processed by steaming and drying with the root skin left intact. Whole Asian ginseng roots can be infused as herbal tea and used to make extracts.
In Asia, wars have been fought over possession of fields where wild ginseng grew abundantly. Ginseng is a known adaptogen that helps the body adapt to stress and balance itself. A literal translation of “ginseng” from Cantonese means “human root,” referring to the root’s resemblance to a person. Panax ginseng has been used for centuries and is considered a revered herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM, ginseng root is a Qi (ch’i) herb tonic working primarily on the meridians of the spleen and stomach.
Red ginseng derives its name from the color it takes on during a special preservation method that involves steaming (and sometimes sun-drying) with the peel intact. Red ginseng usually comes from China or Korea and is considered slightly stronger and more stimulating than white ginseng. Ginseng is usually prepared as tea, in extracts, or sometimes in capsules. More recently, it has found its way into the energy drink market.
Note: Concurrent use with caffeine and other stimulants is not advised, as overstimulation may occur in susceptible persons.
In Magick, Ginseng is ruled by the Sun and Fire. It can be used at work for protection, to attract love, and for most kinds of wish magick!
