Zanthoxylum clava-herculis is native to the southeastern United States. The tree has distinctive spines along its bark and leathery leaves with panicles of small, white flowers. For centuries, prickly ash bark has been used by Native Americans and, later, by Eclectic herbalists for its beneficial properties. Prickly ash bark can be incorporated into herbal formulas, steeped as tea, or extracted.
Just as with Mandrake, this is the American version of the traditional Ash tree, which is native to Europe. It can be safely substituted in any ritual that requires Ash. Ash is sacred to many deities, including Uranus, Poseidon, Thor, Woden, Neptune, Mars, and Gwydion. The Ancient Teutons believed that Ash was the sacred tree, also known as Ygdrasill, the world tree. Ash is a powerful herb for protection magick. This herb is traditionally burned at Yule to bring prosperity for the coming year. This is also a powerful herb for healing spells, charms, and mixes.
