Mentha pulegium is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Pennyroyal is known for its intense aroma and has been used since ancient Greece for its beneficial properties. Pennyroyal leaf can be used with a light hand as a flavoring agent in herbal teas and in cooking. Also spelled penny royal, the herb should be used with caution and respect.
