Milk Thistle is a tall, spiny plant with distinctive white-marbled leaves, native to the Mediterranean and now cultivated worldwide. The seed has been used for over 2,000 years, prized as the concentrated source of silymarin — a complex of flavonolignans including silybin, silychristin, and silydianin — considered the plant's most active and revered constituent.

Traditionally used as a liver and gallbladder tonic, Milk Thistle seed has long been valued to support healthy liver function and digestion. Historically used in Europe for jaundice and biliary complaints, and traditionally taken by nursing mothers as a galactagogue to support milk supply. Often brewed as a tea, taken as a tincture, or ground and encapsulated.

NOTE: Milk Thistle may cause mild allergic reactions in those sensitive to plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) family, such as ragweed, marigold, or chrysanthemum. May have a mild laxative effect in some individuals. Should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical guidance, despite its traditional use as a galactagogue, due to limited modern safety data. As with any herb, consult a healthcare provider before use if you are on medication or have underlying health conditions.

In magick, Milk Thistle is associated with protection, courage, and the sacred feminine — its milky white-veined leaves tied in folklore to the Virgin Mary, giving rise to names like "St. Mary's Thistle." It has traditionally been carried or used in charms for protection from harm and to invoke inner strength, and is considered an herb of resilience — thriving in harsh, rocky ground much as it's said to help the body recover strength and vitality.
