A close relative of oregano without all the volatile oils, marjoram provides a different, gentler mouthfeel, perfect for recipes calling for a delicate herbal spice. Origanum majorana, also called sweet marjoram, is a culinary herb in the mint family and can be used as a substitute for Mediterranean oregano.

Marjoram is a culinary herb in the mint family. It needs a hot climate to develop its full aroma, but it loses some of its flavor when it is dried. Marjoram goes well with thyme, bay leaves, black pepper, and juniper berries. Marjoram is a Greek word meaning "Joy of the Mountain". According to Greek myth, Aphrodite said that the smell of marjoram was the smell of impending good luck. Greeks also believed that if it was growing on a grave, it was a sign that the departed soul had found happiness. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was worn by bridal couples to signify love, honor, and happiness. It was used in England for many years as an ingredient in snuff, then as a somewhat exotic flavoring for beer.

Active Compounds: terpinen-4-ol, cis-sabinene hydrate, and γ-terpinene, flavonoids, phenylpropane glycosides, lamiaceous tannins, volatile oils, and triterpene acids.

Actions: Analgesic, antibacterial, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, nervine, sedative.

Indications: Marjoram is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat digestive issues (cramps, bloating), respiratory infections (coughs, colds), and to relieve stress or anxiety through its calming, nervine properties. It is commonly consumed as tea or applied topically as an oil to aid hormone regulation—particularly for PCOS—and to soothe muscle aches.

Precautions: Marjoram is generally safe in culinary amounts but has significant potential interactions when taken in medicinal doses. Key interactions include enhanced bleeding risks with blood thinners, increased effects of diabetes medications causing low blood sugar, reduced efficacy of drying medicines (anticholinergics), and elevated side effects with Alzheimer’s/glaucoma drugs (cholinergics).

Herbal Magick: In magical lore, marjoram is a powerful herb of protection, love, and emotional healing, historically associated with Venus and the element of Air. It is used to bring peace, comfort, and joy, often employed in spells for protection, alleviating grief, and mending broken bonds.
