Amla, also called Indian Gooseberry, is the fruit of a small tree native to India and Southeast Asia, long prized in Ayurvedic tradition as one of the most revered rejuvenative tonics. It's traditionally used as a beauty tonic, valued for its antioxidant properties and for supporting a healthy inflammatory response while nourishing tissues from the blood vessels to the skin. Traditionally taken to support digestion, hair and skin health, and general vitality, amla is often used as a daily tonic — brewed as a tea, stirred into smoothies, or taken in classic Ayurvedic formulas like Triphala and Chyavanprash.

NOTE: Amla may slow blood clotting — those on blood-thinning medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Amla may also lower blood sugar, so those on diabetes medications should monitor levels closely if combining the two. Should be avoided in high doses during acute diarrhea or dysentery. As with any herb, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on medication should consult a healthcare provider before use.

In magick, Amla is revered in Ayurvedic and Hindu tradition as a sacred tree of purification and renewal, associated with the goddess Lakshmi and often planted near temples as a symbol of prosperity and longevity. It is used in rituals to invite abundance, cleanse negative energy, and support long life, and its fruit is considered a gift of the divine feminine — nourishing, restorative, and deeply connected to themes of rebirth and vitality.
